Founded in 587 by a priest from Osaka's Shitennoji, Rokkakudo pre-dates Kyoto and is the 18th temple on the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage.
Rokkakudo Temple is tucked in a sidestreet off busy Karasuma Road.
Rokkakudo gets its name from the hexagonal shape of the main hall. The temple is the birthplace of ikebana, the art of flower-arranging.
