Nakayama-dera is the 24th temple on the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage.

According to legend, a "fallen woman" came to hide in the temple but her hair got caught in the temple bell rope, tearing out a bald spot on top of her head that looked like a monk's tonsure. Thereafter, the woman repented and devoted her life to Kannon.
