Founded in 888, Sekizanzenin is a sub-temple of Enryakuji Temple located at the base of Mount Hiei. The principal image of worship is Taizanfukun, the guardian deity for the Tendai sect. Being located northeast of the Imperial Palace it stands right in the path taken by the demons of Yin-Yang belief. As a result, the temple is popular for its ability to protect against evil. The carved wooden monkey on the roof of the Worshippers' Hall faces towards the Imperial Palace and serves as a guardian against disaster.
