Hoko-ji Temple, Kyoto

Built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1586, Hokoji Temple was an attempt to recreate the grandeur of Nara's Todaiji Temple. Unfortunately, it was devastated by an earthquake in 1596 and only the enormous bell remains today. The temple is located in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto.
