Chion-in Temple, Kyoto

Founded by Honen in 1234, Chion-in is the head temple of the Jodo Shu (Pure Land) sect. This very busy temple located in Kyoto's Higashiyama area features one of Japan's largest gates and attracts hordes of vistors, some of whom can be seen circling the Prayer Hall chanting the name of Amida.
